We take the difficulty out of CNC plasma cutting by drawing your parts for you. Simply supply dimensions and a sketch and we will take care of the CAD design and CNC programming. There is often confusion about the difference between plasma cutting, water jet cutting and laser cutting. Plasma cutting is designed specifically for cutting metal, whereas water jet and laser can cut a number of different materials. The way a plasma cutter works is by forcing compressed gas (oxygen in this case) through a nozzle where an electrode emits an arc. The arc travels to the surface of the metal being cut while turning some of the gas into plasma. The plasma is so hot it melts the metal, and the pressurized gas forces the molten metal through the cut and away from the bottom surface.
The advantages and drawbacks of these different cutting methods are this:
This is the most affordable cutting method while still delivering great speed and accuracy. It cuts mild steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, aluminum and various other metals. The main drawback of plasma cutting is edge squareness, although with a properly tuned machine this is very miniscule (between 1 – 3 degrees) and doesn’t pose a problem for most applications.
Water Jet Cutting
The advantages of a water jet system are its ability to cut incredibly thick material (upwards of 12” in aluminum), and it’s edge squarness. This can be useful for heavy-duty machinery and other parts where very tight tolerances are required. The drawbacks of this cutting style are that it is quite costly, and notably slower than plasma.
Laser cutting is the most impressive-sounding of the three, and it deserves it. With the ability to cut extremely intricate pieces with incredible accuracy, laser cutting delivers something neither water jet nor plasma can. Laser cutters can have positioning accuracy of 10 micrometers and can have cutting tolerances down to 0.001” (0.025 mm). The drawbacks are that it can’t cut very thick material, and it is very expensive.
